Three times champion Grand Prix driver of the world, and the first man to win this title at the wheel of a car bearing his own name, Jack Brabham holds a unique position in the world of motor racing. He is not only a successful driver; he has built up an important and thriving company, making and selling racing cars, and he has numerous other business interests connected with both cars and boats. To everything he does he brings the same quiet charm and the ability to inspire loyalty and respect from all the people with whom he works, whether they are members of the Brabham organisation-with whom he had to share the stresses of making a top Grand Prix team tick -or the other drivers representing the opposition. Stirling Moss tells a typical story of him: ‘One time in New Zealand I had a half-shaft break, Jack had a spare and he gave it to me. He’d have helped put it on if I had asked him. He knew I could beat him with it-as it happened, I did but that wouldn’t make any difference to him.’ And, writing some ten years ago, Moss finished on a prophetic note: ‘He’s building a car of his own now, and I can’t think of many things that would make me happier than to see him have a really world-wide success with it.’
The good-humoured smile and the air of determination – he was brought up in the hard school of Australian dirt-track drivers – are well-known, but few people know the real man behind the public image. Less flamboyant than some of his colleagues, he has a reputation for being a man of few words. Up till now he has certainly not been very forthcoming about himself in print. The relaxed, easy style of his writing gives the book an added, and perhaps to some an unexpected, quality of humour and warm humanity. When the Flag Drops is a success story, and also a revealing self-portrait of a great driver.
