Foreword from the Author
Looking back, the Toyota 2000GT is nothing short of extraordinary.
Not only is it still celebrated worldwide as one of Japan’s most iconic classic cars, but the story behind its creation is just as remarkable—almost like a miracle.
There are many reasons for this: the spark of the original idea, the elite design team that came together, the collaboration between the companies involved in its production, and the overwhelming public support after the prototype’s debut. This huge reaction at the motor show made it possible for the car to go into commercial production. Without any one of these elements, the car would never have existed.
The Toyota 2000GT remains special today because of all these factors, and it emerged at a time when Japanese automobiles were making a big leap forward.
I wrote a book about the Toyota 2000GT long ago, back when I simply admired it as a beautiful car. As I grew older and learned more, I had the chance to speak directly with Nozaki, the man who created it from scratch, which completely changed my perspective. I came to see it as a work of refined taste, rather than one driven purely by heart and soul. From here on, I want to record this “miracle” and, if possible, share it overseas as part of Japanese automotive history.
With this in mind, I’ve compiled this book as a culmination of my thoughts on the Toyota 2000GT to date, and my choice to include both Japanese and English reflects my desire to reach beyond borders.
