Data logging revolutionised our ability to gain objective performance information from a competition car. The recording tachometer was the first device that could store a continuous record in an electronic memory, and though only engine revs were logged, it was a giant leap from the rev counter ‘tell-tale’. Then came the ability to log data from all manner of sensors on the chassis, suspension, engine, drivetrain and aerodynamics. Today’s problem is analysing all the data gathered in the time available.
In this second edition, the author examines data logging from the basics upwards, including the various levels of systems available, from the single-channel rpm recorder, to intermediate-level systems recording several parameters, through to advanced multi-channel data loggers and recent developments in GPS-based systems. No previous knowledge is assumed – there is even guidance on choosing a suitable computer and how to use it before loading your data analysis software!
The principles of installing sensors, wiring, connections, logger units and download connections are covered and, of course, much space is devoted to data analysis, showing how the charts and graphs can be interpreted to improve the engine, chassis and driver performance. There are also examples of how teams in various competition categories benefit from the use of data logging. This book will appeal to anyone wanting to learn about, or improve, their use of data logging.
